Style, Spirit & Soul

Lifestyle - ESSENCE (Print & Digital)

The Project: I pitched, reported, wrote and functioned as the editor on record for this six-page feature celebrating the history, style and pride of the beloved homecoming at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).I also pitched the photo editor who worked on the feature, Adrienne Waheed, and she researched and curated all images for this article. In short, I worked on every part of this package from conception to completion.

My Role: Waheed and I worked together closely to ensure there was a balanced representation of current and vintage images from more than a dozen institutions. Extensive research was conducted prior to penning the story. I interviewed prominent HBCU alums, a museum CEO and even Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth Carter for this feature. The article gained a large amount of interest with thought leaders throughout a span of ages and as a result I was invited to discuss the story in an interview on So Thoro TV in September 2022.
