The Project: For this assignment, I traveled to Hilton Head, South Carolina to explore the historic town of Mitchelville -- the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved African people in the United States.

My Role: After arriving on the ground in Hilton Head, I conducted interviews with nearly a dozen locals from community leaders to authors to boutique owners. In addition to conducting the necessary research and reporting to pen an in-depth article about the history of Mitchelville, I was simultaneously able to deliver a timely and accurate story about the under-celebrated American treasure that is Geechee/Gullah culture. This article received a gold award (the highest in category) from the North American Travel Journalists Association in their coveted 32nd Annual Excellence in Travel Journalism Awards.
